2017 Reading Challenge

5 March 2017 | By

One of my goals for this year is to complete the Goodreads 2017 Reading Challenge! There are so many benefits of reading, I just need some extra motivation to actually get me there.

But first, some context. Skip ahead to here if you’re already familiar with Goodreads and their annual Reading Challenge.

…Goodreads? What’s that?

Goodreads is probably best described as a one-stop-shop for all things reading-related. Basically, it’s a growing community (currently with 55 million members!) of book-lovers, bibliophiles and everyday readers.

It’s a fantastic site to find ratings for books before you read them, alongside blurbs, links to author details and related books, and heaps of reviews from other readers. A handy feature is the barcode scanner in the free mobile app (I use the Android version), which you can use to quickly scan a book you’ve picked off a shelf at the library to get access to all related info.

Goodreads - meeting your next favourite book

Personally, I really like Goodreads for its lists. I’ve always been a little obsessed with lists, and now I easily track all the books I’ve read over the years, discover books to add to my “To Read” list (or any other custom list I feel like creating), compile my favourite quotes, etc. Collaborative lists based on different interests and topics are super useful points of reference when trying to find a new novel, series or non-fiction to dive into.

Another key part of Goodreads is its social features – by syncing with Facebook, your email contacts or other forms of social media, you can connect with friends and see what they’re reading, recommend specific books to others, or leave reading progress updates, statuses and comments on your feed.

But what this is really about… the READING CHALLENGE!

Every year, there’s a Goodreads Reading Challenge, where you set your personal goal for the number of books you want to read in the year ahead and track progress as you make your way through!

2017 Reading Challenge - collecting books to read through the year!

I first tried it last year (check out what I read during the 2016 Reading Challenge) but unfortunately didn’t do so well… only got through 15 books out of my 52 book goal Looking back at the dates recorded against each of the books I completed in 2016, I managed to be reasonably consistent up until May – I blame the lack of continued reading after that to last-minute wedding prep, being off on my honeymoon and then the newfound busyness of married life!

My 2017 Reading Challenge

I love reading by the water's edge, so relaxing

For 2017, I set my goal to be…

52 books!

Same as last year, hopefully at a cadence of one book per week.

The Goodreads 2017 Reading Challenge tracker tells me that so far I’ve read 7 books, which is close enough to being on schedule, however there was definitely more reading in January/early February and a bit less lately…most likely because I’ve been spending more time on writing these posts!

If you’re a Goodreads user too, go ahead and add me (here’s a link to my profile) or comment a link to your profile below.

I always love reading books based on other people’s recommendations, I’m keen to try (almost) anything!

  1. I love Goodreads and books! Best of luck with the challenge, I tried it once but I kept forgetting to put the books on I’d read and was reading. Oops.
Hope this week is treating you kindly.

    1. Thanks Donna! That sounds like a good problem to have…better than not reading enough to have things to put there in the first place
