What I miss most (and least!) about living at home

24 July 2017 | By

It’s been over a year now since I moved out of my family’s home, once I got married. Although it feels like it’s been forever! Previously I lived out of home when I stayed at college for a year, but other than that I’ve grown up and lived with my family the entire time.

There are definitely things I miss most and least about not living at home anymore. And by “home” I mean my family’s house. Can’t break the habit of calling it that, even though I have a house of my own now!

What I miss most about living at home

  1. The fam – the parents, sis and bro. They’re all cool, and I miss having them around all the time. Perhaps it was annoying for them, but I liked just chatting about anything and everything with them all the time. Bit harder to do that now!
  2. The doge – despite being annoying sometimes when he won’t leave you alone and just wants to play all the time…he’s pretty entertaining. Bonus points for having other family members doing the dirty work like picking up after him and cleaning, etc.
  3. Meals – I’m half Filipino and I really miss my Filo food because I haven’t yet learned how to cook it like my dad does! Also having healthy and yummy home-cooked dinners every night from the parents. Probably something I took for granted a bit too much…realising this now that I’m needing to fend for myself.
  4. Cheap – once you have your own place, whether it’s through renting or owning your own house, you really realise all the expenses that come along with it! From bills, to maintenance, to mortgage/rent payments, the list goes on…and it’s not cheap, that’s for sure. I’m so glad I made the effort to save lots of my earnings while living at home, because it’s much harder to do that now!

Things I don’t miss about living at home…

  1. Having to get out of PJs during the day, otherwise risk parents scolding me about it haha! Now I can always wear whatever I like, whenever I like
  2. Not being able to organise and decorate the house the way I’d want to, aside from my bedroom. Now in my own house I can do what I want!

Honestly, there’s not a lot that I don’t miss about living back at home. Things were always pretty great, and I was very fortunate to be so well taken care of there!

If you no longer live in your family’s home – what do you miss most/least about living elsewhere? I’m interested to know how others feel about this!

  1. I´m living in another country than my parents for 4 years now! And i miss so much! When I´m going back home for some days I love to be the little girl again

  2. I think what I miss the most, is not having any bills! I liked being able to save up money and not feel guilty spending it on myself!

  3. Oh it’s so true! The food and company are both amazing and sometimes too much (for me anyway). As much as I love my ethnic food, sometimes when I’m at home I wish my mom would just change it up already. Can’t complain about free I guess.

    Thanks for the reflections,

  4. I still miss living at home even though am a mother with my own family. Am constantly thinking when will I grow up as my parents were always taking every decision to make sure that we were all taken care of to their best of their abilities . I keep questioning myself whether I would be able to provide that same level of care and dedication to my own children especially now that I live in a country where everything is fast as the speed of life.
Am confident though that I can do it and am doing it.
Parents or no parents life has to go on.
    Thanks for this post.

  5. Nice topic. I still live at home, but I think I’d feel the same way about your reasons for missing it. Well, apart from the food – my family doesn’t really cook a lot, and I’m trying to learn more so I can do healthier things. But the fact that I can save more, and that I have people around to hang with is great.

  6. Mmm, I love Filipino food! Now I want some. But yeah, I hear ya. There are some pros and cons to living at home with family. I miss not having to pay for stuff.

  7. I feel ya, it’s not cheap at all for sure. But there’s nothing like having your own space and be able to express yourself creatively decor-wise!

  8. Parents house is still the best. Whenever I visit my Mom, she always cook as if there is a celebration. And I need to eat her cooking as if am too thin.

  9. Moving out of the house is such a huge step in life. It is exciting, scary and surreal all at the same time ! For me, these are the top 2 things that pop into my mind when I think about what I miss most about home…. First, Momma’s homemade meals are simply divine. She can sauté, boil, fry, bake, stew, braise, or broil anything extremely well ! And second my Daddy’s life anecdotes that have stuck with me since I was a kid !

  10. I can relate! I come from a closely knit family and I moved away from home when I got married. I miss being close with family. There’s definitely no place like home!

  11. I rented with friends and I can 100% say that I didn’t miss anything about living at home. I’ve been living at home for a year now (and it is great), but I MISS MY FREEDOM. So much. I’m currently looking at jobs on the sly so I can move out again. Also, your wee boy is so cute! I have one of my own and he’s just a few months older than yours! They grow so fast, so enjoy every single moment!
